Burke, Williams & Sorensen, LLP is seeking a full-time Litigation Paralegal for our Oakland office. This is a full-time non-exempt 7.5 hour/day position. 90 days on-site during intro period, then hybrid.
Objective
This role is essential in providing comprehensive support to attorneys throughout the litigation process, from the initial case evaluation to post-trial activities. This role requires a deep understanding of California’s legal procedures, experience in trial preparation, and the ability to manage complex legal tasks under tight deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Case Preparation: Assist in the preparation of cases for trial, including gathering evidence, conducting legal research, and coordinating the testimony of witnesses.Ensure all materials comply with California legal standards.
- Document Management: Manage a large volume of case documents, including pleadings, discovery materials, and evidence. Utilize legal software to organize documents and ensure they are easily accessible during trials.
- Trial Support: Provide direct support before, during, and after trials. Responsibilities include preparing trial binders, assisting with voir dire, jury selection, and managing exhibits.
- Legal Research and Writing: Conduct comprehensive legal research using California-specific resources. Prepare legal documents such as briefs, memoranda, and pleadings in accordance with California court requirements.
- Client Interaction: Act as a liaison between the legal team and clients, keeping clients informed about the progress of their cases and gathering necessary information for trial preparation.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations in California, as well as adherence to trial procedures and court deadlines.
- Continuing Education: Stay updated on changes in California legal procedures and trial practices through continuing education and professional development opportunities.
Qualifications
- Ability to work and bill as a paralegal under California Business & Professions Code section 6450.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a litigation paralegal, with significant experience in trial preparation and support.
- In-depth knowledge of California legal procedures and court systems, with a strong understanding of litigation processes.
- Proficient in legal research databases and technology used in trial preparation, such as case management software, exhibit presentation software, PowerPoint, etc.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a legal team and present and interact professionally with clients and court personnel.
Compensation
The pay range for this position is the hourly equivalent of $85,000 – $105,000 annually. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and skillset. Annual discretionary and billable hours bonuses, competitive health insurance benefits, and 401(k) with a partial match are offered when individuals are eligible for benefits.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This role is based in a dynamic, fast-paced law office environment and may require long hours and flexibility, especially as trials approach. It involves significant computer work and document management, and possibly travel to courthouses and other locations for trial preparation and support.
